Through hail and high water, professor rushes to adopt Louisiana baby

All adoptive parents encounter obstacles in their efforts to adopt a child. Not all adoptive parents encounter obstacles as large as a major hurricane.
Glenda Jones, an assistant professor of English and philosophy at the University of Wisconsin-Stout, had been trying to adopt a baby for more than a year. In August, the call came. The adoption agency asked her to come immediately to Louisiana to pick up a one-month-old infant.
As Jones drove south, she was unaware that Hurricane Gustav was making its way toward the Louisiana coastline. On the second day of her trip, Jones learned of the intense storm and the impending evacuations from her mother.
The desire to be a mother, and her protective instinct for the baby, were strong. Jones pressed onward to Louisiana — to battle Hurricane Gustav and the adoption paperwork.
